The memorial erected in honor of the soldiers of the Elfsborg regiment who fell in the Russo-Swedish War (1788-1790) is located in the churchyard next to Sulkava Church. The memorial was erected in 1936 by the Royal Elfsborg Regiment.
On the memorial, there is the following text in Finnish:
“Soldiers of the Elfsborg regiment, who sacrificed their lives for the homeland in the Russo- Swedish War (1788-1790), rest here. The memorial was erected by the Royal Elfsborg Regiment in 1936.”
The memorial cross of the soldiers of the Elfsborg regiment
The memorial cross of the soldiers of the Elfsborg regiment who fell in the Russo-Swedish War (1788- 1790) is located in the Halttula village of Sulkava. Titular Counsellor Kaarlo Hämäläinen erected the grave mound in 1934, together with the villagers of Halttula. On top of the mound, Lions Club Sulkava erected a cross made of copper. The unveiling ceremony of the cross took place on June 19th, 1966. The plaque on the memorial cross has the following text in Finnish:
“THE GRAVEYARD OF THE SOLDIERS OF THE ELFSBORG REGIMENT WHO FELL IN THE RUSSO-SWEDISH WAR (1788-1790). THE GRAVEYARD WAS FOUND AND THE MEMORIAL ERECTED BY TITULAR COUNCILLOR KAARLO HÄMÄLÄINEN TOGETHER WITH THE VILLAGERS OF HALTTULA IN 1934 I THE CROSS WAS ERECTED BY LIONS CLUB SULKAVA IN 1966.”
